Black Sapotes

The Black Sapote is commonly referred to as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It tastes like chocolate when ripe and the skin will be a dark brown colour and the flesh black/dark chocolate.

When immature, the fruit appears bright green and feels rock hard to the touch. If eaten green the fruit will taste slightly bitter. Black Sapote should not be put in the fridge until it is ripe.

Black Sapotes are available from May through to January each year. They are grown in Bundaberg, Cairns and Rockhampton in Queensland.

If you can’t imagine a piece of fruit tasting like chocolate, then you’ll have to buy a tray to see for yourself! Black Sapotes are an extremely rich source of Vitamin C too (the healthy way to eat chocolate).
