Broccolini resembles regular broccoli, but is more delicate in flavour and appearance. It is the product of a cross between Chinese broccoli and regular broccoli. The thin stems and small heads are a bold green colour which deepens with cooking. Broccolini is most often used in Asian cuisine and stir-fries. It is also wonderful when steamed or boiled and used as a side dish.
Choose broccolini with firm, bright green stems and dark green heads that are free from yellow tinges. Avoid those that are dry or wilted looking. Store broccolini, wrapped in plastic, in the crisper section of the fridge for up to one week.
Serving Suggestion: Heat one tablespoon of vegetable oil in a wok until shimmery. Add two cloves fresh minced garlic and cook until fragrant. Add 500g broccolini and 1/2 of a red capsicum, thinly sliced. Stir-fry the vegetables until crisp tender. Add a generous pat of butter to the wok and toss to melt and coat. Drizzle with a bit of fresh lemon juice and serve hot.
