What's In Season this December
The bounty of summer fruit continues this week with stone fruit, grapes, figs, mangoes and cherries all abundant..
Limes, lychees, pawpaw, pineapple, and passionfruit – all from north Queensland – are well supplied and crying out for fruit salads or cocktails. One of our favourites is the Panama variety of passionfruit, which is especially sweet at the moment. Pineapple prices will depend on size, while lime prices should continue to drop as supplies increase.
Kensington Pride and R2E2 mangoes from Bowen and Mareeba are great eating, as are Reed and Hass avocados from Mount Tamborine. Combine them with butter lettuce, cooked tiger prawns, lime juice, and coriander for a taste of summer or a crowd-pleasing Christmas Day salad.
Both white and red seedless grapes are coming into season and prices will continue to drop over the coming weeks. Blueberries and raspberries from the southern states are the pick of the berries, while the fig season is getting started and prices are looking quite good. Apricots as well as white and yellow nectarines and peaches are all well-supplied.
The shelves are overflowing with all varieties of tomato, including a particular glut of local cherry and grape tomatoes, bringing prices to all-time lows. Of the larger varieties, gourmet and truss tomatoes are great eating.
This week’s top pick is the plum, with excellent supplies streaming in from all over Queensland – look for Red Beaut from Applethorpe, as well as Wilson, blood and black varieties from Stanthorpe. Select smooth-skinned, shiny fruit and store in the refrigerator in a plastic bag for up to four days.
Packed with vitamin C and fibre, plums are also low GI so they’re a more constant source of energy. Plums work well in a versatile range of dishes from desserts, jams, and cakes to savoury sauces and meat dishes. They pair well with flavours such as almond, yoghurt, cinnamon, citrus, chestnut, hazelnut, honey, port, vanilla, star anise, ginger, and duck.
