Pineapple is a well-loved, sweet-tart tropical treat. This large, oval fruit is covered with spiny skin and de-crowned for easier storage and preparation. Pineapple is a very versatile fruit and can be baked or grilled in either sweet and savoury dishes or eaten fresh. The high level of vitamin C and antioxidants makes pineapple the perfect ingredient for a morning smoothie.
Choose pineapples with fresh looking leaves and a sweet smell. The colour can range from green to gold to brown. Avoid choosing fruit with soft spots. Pineapples can be stored at room temperature for one to two days.
Preparation Tip: Cutting a pineapple is easier than it looks. Start by washing and drying the outside of the pineapple. Lay the pineapple on it’s side on the cutting surface and cut off the top and the bottom sections with a large knife. Stand the pineapple vertically on the flat end and cut downward along the outer edge to remove a section of skin. Rotate the pineapple and continue cutting until all of the skin has been removed. Cut the pineapple into quarters, vertically. Stand each quarter on it’s end and cut away the core from the centre. Finish slicing the pineapple as desired.
